Today, America treats its founders as reliquaries and as sure-minded, certain personalities who declared American Independence and laid down its foundations. But, writes Caroline Winterer in Aeon Magazine, the revolutionaries were very unsure and uncertain about many things; something which deserves to be celebrated more, rather than the Fable of Founder Certainty, as that uncertainty is what inspires inquiry, brings new understanding and opens great possibilities.
